It’s Time for a Filofax Break

I’ve been using a Filofax ever since I stumbled across the wide world of internet Filofax lovers, and it’s been a love – hate relationship from the get-go.

First, I ordered what I thought was a personal size Metropol, only to discover that the seller was wrong and it was actually a pocket size. About the size of my hand and way too hard to write in.

I soon gained 3 more (one has been passes on to someone else), and have been using a personal Fusion pretty consistently since I won it in a giveaway over a year ago.

I carry it around, yet rarely use it for more than recording what happened, rather than doing any planning. Below is the Metropol, the Fusion, and my gorgeous A5 Chameleon.

I’ve been hearing about Erin Condren planners for a while (along with a dozen or so others, too), and pulled up the site over the weekend to see what’s up. There was a lot about them that I liked, but they are fairly expensive at a base price of $50.00, and almost every review has mentioned how heavy they are. Very heavy, from what I gather.

I found a comparison blog post between those and Plum Paper Designs. Very similar in style, fewer extras than Condron – which is OK with me: my washi-tape and bells and whistles Filofax extras phase ended rather quickly. The Plum Paper planners are lighter, you can start your year where you want to (mine is Sept, my holdover from school ‘beginning of the year’ feeling), and they start at a mere $31.00.

The biggest thing that attracted me to them was having everything in one place for the entire year, making research at a later date easier. With the Filofax, each page stands alone, and so I have alligator-clipped piles of months clipped together, and going through them gets to be more of a pain than finding what I need is worth. Major fail.

So I’m putting the Filofax away for a year (once I get the Plum Paper) and we’ll see how it goes!

To Filofax or Not to Filofax

I have 3 Filofaxes; one pocket-size, one personal, and one A5 Chameleon (love!). The personal, a Fusion (as pictured on the left) is carried with me at all times, and I’ve got to admit: a lot of times that’s all I do with it. Come to find out, I’m more of a recorder than a planner, so it ends up that I scribble things at the end of the day (or 3 or 4 days later), and pretty much birthdays/anniversaries and my guy’s doctors appointments are the only things that are written ahead of time.

Plus, it’s heavy. Not ‘Oh my gosh, what the hell do you have in there?!!” heavy, but noticeably so when it’s not in there. It’s packed full of things I carry with me and pages to use…none of which ever happens. It’s like buying a bigger purse: you shove in a ton of ‘just-in-case’ stuff, and discover that 99% of it never gets used and you’ve got a persistent backache to show for it.

So last night I pulled out Write It Down, Make It Happen, because I wanted a hardcover to read while eating dinner (you can lay a hardcover down and turn the pages), and as I’m reading along, I found a suggestion that I’m going to try. She notes that she gave a workshop in Greece and supplied her students with mini notebooks (those ones that look like composition notebooks, but are pocket-sized) and called them “Tidbit” books. They were to “take the book wherever they went and jot down concepts as they came to their mind, perhaps images they might want to write up more thoroughly later, or plans to put in motion once they returned to their own countries.”

I had just been wondering what to write in my Filofax (aka Miss Moneypenny) for the day, and reading this was like a bolt from the heavens. I remembered that I had 2 or 3 of those exact notebooks (stationery collector, what can I say), and I dug them out. Lo and behold, on one I’d written Tidbits and dated it; May 13, 2013. And I’d written in it for exactly two days. What I noticed, though, was that I’d used it more like a Gratitude Journal than a brain dump, and I’m pretty sure that’s why it didn’t last long. I also think that’s about the time I got into Filofaxes, go figure. 😉

mini notebooks

I placed the book next to the bed when we headed off to snoozeville, and as usual, my brain was still running and running with ideas, so I grabbed the tiny book, headed off to the bathroom so I wouldn’t disturb Himself, and scribbled away all that was on my mind, including blog ideas (like this one). Then I was able to zonk out peacefully til morning.

I’ll be heading off to work in about an hour, and Miss Moneypenny will stay home (which means, of course, that there will be something in it that I’ll need today)., but the tidbit book is tucked in my back pocket – along with a pen that I hope doesn’t break. I’m going to play with this for a while (and once this notebook is filled up, I’ve another in the wings). And hey…I had NO idea they came narrow-ruled, too! Woohoo!

Another thought I had was to take my pocket Metropol Filofax, punch holes in a lot of index cards, fill it with those and those alone, and use it in the same manner. But it doesn’t actually fit in one’s pocket, and I think having to dig it out of my purse every time I want to jot down a random thought would be counterproductive. So I’ll see how these minis work out first.

Filofax and the Bullet Journal

It’s been a while since I did a post about using my Filofax – in this case my Personal Fusion, and I came across a post on G+ today by Becky of Becky’s Paper Route which has me writing about it again.

I’ve been using a Filofax for a while, and currently have 3. The Personal is the one I carry with me to use on a daily basis, but as you can see, I’ve been seriously under-using it.

Some days DO have notes, but again, nothing extensive (excuse the #essentialtremor blurred picture). Granted, there are days that have more written down, but overall not many.

I even have a year planner, and not one thing noted on it. Planning is not my strong suit, especially for an entire year!

After reading Becky’s post and watching the Bullet Journal vid again, I restructured the bullet icons I was using (I tore up the key I had written, or I’d show you how ridiculous it was), and now it’s not only simpler, but more in tune with what I really need to note.

I’m also going to implement the monthly calendar and monthly task list, something I’ve not used one bit. I think more planning would probably help me, don’t you? 😉 I’ll do an update in a month or so and let you know how it’s going. I’m also using my beloved A5 Chameleon for my healing work, and I’m about to go set up a bullet system for that one, too.

Filofax Love

I was going to move all my Filofax posts here from my other blog, but decided it was too much work, so only new ones will be here with links to that site. 😉

I decided to stick with the Chameleon – it is SO soft that it’s hard not to keep picking it up!  I had too many pens in it and it caused bulging, as well as difficulty clasping (this picture has gone MIA for some unknown reason).

…and I think I figured out the pen problem.  I removed the orange one (it bled through anyway), and clipped the highlighter to the rings.  Then, I didn’t need the “today” marker because it is easy to find the page now:

You can see my color-coding list that I created, too.  And the lovely post-it’s that my friend sent me with the Chameleon. 🙂

Yesterday I came across this interesting video by Kent from Oz, and thought I’d try it out.  I hand-drew the circle in my planner, and blocked out a bit of time (that has now extended much longer) to work online:

Oh, underneath is the logging system for counting sugars and carbs as in The Belly Fat Cure.

The last change I made was finally putting tags on the dividers.  I just used little arrow-shaped post-its, taped over them, cut off the points, and wrote on them with a Sharpie.  Voila!  The fluorescent pink really stands out. 😉
